Why I Started My Career in Real Estate
Updated: Jul 13, 2019
Before I started my career in real estate sales, I was in the military. Life was good, all I had to do was to make sure systems were up and running every day and I get a salary on the 10th of every month that was pretty decent.
On my 5th year of service, I began to seriously reflect on who I was 10 years ago and the amount of ambition the young me had. I had dreams, even though they may seem far fetch and ridiculous! They change often too. One day I was sharing with my dad how I might want to be a lawyer, and the next day I would change my mind and say I wish to become a pilot (despite my fear of heights).
I started to imagine myself in my 50s and approaching my retirement (mandatory retirement age in the military is 60). Do I really see myself wearing the same uniform until I am 60 years old? What about all my hopes and dreams?
Choosing between being able to try new things and staying in my comfort zone, I decided that I wish to give it all up. The decent pay, health benefits and annual leaves, all of it. The problem was, I didn't know what I wanted to do.
I chanced upon an advertisement on Facebook where a real estate firm was looking to hire. The recruiter painted a beautiful picture of the industry, how much money I can make, that sort of thing. I stepped back and think about what she was not telling me. What about all the work that I will have to put in to achieve success?
I kept looking and was eventually introduced to another real estate agent. From the start, he skipped all the sugarcoating of the industry and told me all of the challenges that will come at me if I really decided to join. If my goal was to get out of my comfort zone, I believe these challenges will help grow me as a person and steer me towards success.
In the end, I decided to go for my real estate license exam and the rest is history.
I am only at the start of my journey, but I wish to share more of my upcoming experiences on this blog. If you would like to follow me on my journey, you can always find me on social media. From time to time, I will also put in insightful contents that I hope is beneficial to you.
